Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 18, Statera Energy has activated Thurrock Storage, the UK’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), now delivering electricity to the national grid. Located near London, north of the former Tilbury coal power station, the 300 MW facility can supply instantaneous power to up to 680,000 homes for two hours, with a total capacity of 600 MWh. Its rapid response, delivering full output in seconds, enhances grid stability and supports the UK’s clean energy transition.
The strategically positioned Thurrock Storage strengthens energy reliability by providing immediate power where demand is highest. Adjacent to the 450 MW Thurrock Flexible Generation plant, it offers cost-effective backup during periods of low renewable energy output, such as from solar or wind, ensuring efficient energy storage and release.
“We are delighted that Thurrock Storage is now energised, following its connection to the grid by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET),” said Tom Vernon, Statera Energy CEO and Founder. “Increasing BESS capacity is essential for supporting the grid when renewable generation, such as solar and wind, is low or changes quickly. It ensures that energy can be stored efficiently and returned to the grid whenever it’s needed.”
The site’s operation creates local employment opportunities, including apprenticeships and roles in operations and maintenance, aligning with Statera’s commitment to sustainable job creation in the Thurrock area. With over 2.1 GW of projects delivered or under construction and 16 GW in development or consented, Statera has invested £1 billion to date, with plans for up to £7 billion by 2030 to bolster UK energy security and low-carbon goals.
“Battery storage plays a vital role in Britain’s clean energy transition,” said John Twomey, NGET’s Director of Customer and Network Development. “Connecting Thurrock Storage, the UK’s biggest battery, to our transmission network marks a significant step on that journey. Our Tilbury substation once served a coal plant, and with battery connections like this, it’s today helping to power a more sustainable future for the region and the country.”
Thurrock Storage transforms the legacy of the former coal-powered site, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to renewable energy integration. By balancing supply and demand, the BESS supports grid resilience and facilitates the shift toward a sustainable energy future, benefiting both local communities and the national energy system.
