Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 14, AzerEnergy, the state-owned electricity generation and transmission company, is advancing the construction of a 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project, the largest of its kind in Azerbaijan. This initiative marks a significant step in modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure and enhancing grid stability.

The project is being developed at two strategic sites. One facility is located at the 500 kV Absheron substation near the capital, while the other is at the 220 kV Agdash substation in central Azerbaijan. Both locations were selected for their importance in the national transmission network, ensuring that the storage systems will play a critical role in balancing supply and demand.

According to AzerEnergy, construction work is progressing steadily, with major system components already being delivered to the project sites. The deployment of these systems is expected to provide a new level of operational flexibility for the country’s electricity sector.

AzerEnergy highlighted the significance of the development in a press release: “The deployment of battery systems at this scale marks a first not only for Azerbaijan, but for the entire Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.”

The project demonstrates Azerbaijan’s growing focus on integrating advanced technologies to strengthen the resilience and efficiency of its power grid. With renewable energy playing an increasingly important role in the national energy mix, large-scale battery storage will support the integration of intermittent generation sources, such as solar and wind, into the transmission system.

In addition to grid stability, the new BESS facilities are expected to deliver benefits in peak demand management, frequency regulation, and system reliability. These functions will help reduce pressure on conventional generation units and create opportunities for optimizing the use of existing energy resources.

The scale of the project also sets a benchmark in the region, where battery energy storage is still in the early stages of deployment. By implementing one of the largest projects in the CIS, Azerbaijan positions itself as a leader in adopting advanced energy technologies.

Looking ahead, AzerEnergy’s investment in battery systems is expected to provide both immediate and long-term value. In the near term, the facilities will enhance the stability of the national grid, while in the long term, they will serve as a foundation for further integration of renewable energy resources, supporting the country’s objectives for sustainable energy development.
