en.Wedoany.com Reported - At the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Mersin, the installation of hydraulic tanks for the passive core flooding system in the reactor building of Unit 2, constructed by Rosatom, has been successfully completed.

This system is a safety device that operates without human intervention, even during a power outage. A total of eight hydraulic tanks for the passive core flooding system have been installed in the reactor building of Unit 2, with all eight storage tanks for the passive core water pressure system positioned according to the design. These tanks are thick-walled stainless steel pressure vessels, and the assembly process took nine days.

The hydraulic tanks for the passive core flooding system, which provide cooling for the reactor, weigh 77 tons each. Together with their supporting structures, the total weight reaches 96 tons, with a volume of 120 cubic meters. During plant operation, each tank is filled with a boric acid solution. If the pressure in the reactor's primary circuit falls below a set value, this solution is automatically delivered to the active zone to cool the reactor.

Sergei Butckikh, General Manager of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, commented on this, stating that the storage tanks for the passive core flooding system are among the last major pieces of equipment to be installed in the reactor's main circuit using the "open-top" technology. In the next phase of construction for Unit 2, the sixth layer and dome section of the inner containment will be assembled. He also emphasized that the passive core flooding system is crucial, as it minimizes the impact of emergencies even during power outages and is a key component of the nuclear power plant's multi-layered safety system.
