en.Wedoany.com Reported - South Korea's Taihan Cable & Solution has acquired a second cable-laying vessel from the DOF Group to strengthen its capabilities in offshore wind and submarine power cable installation, meeting the growing demand for global grid interconnection infrastructure.
The company signed a sale and purchase agreement with DOF for the 10,000-ton class cable-laying vessel "Skandi Connector," which is scheduled for delivery to South Korea in August this year. With this acquisition, Taihan now owns two dedicated cable-laying vessels—having previously operated the offshore wind-dedicated vessel "PALOS." The addition of the new vessel establishes a dual-vessel installation system, enabling the simultaneous execution of cable-laying tasks for offshore wind, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, and long-distance power interconnection projects.
According to Taihan, the "Skandi Connector" has a maximum loading capacity of 7,000 tons of submarine cable and has previously participated in 27 projects across multiple markets, including Europe, laying a cumulative total of approximately 1,300 kilometers of cable. The vessel is equipped with a DP2 dynamic positioning system, as well as advanced equipment such as large turntables and tensioners for export cable and HVDC installation.
This acquisition will enhance the company's ability to handle inter-array cable and export cable installation in offshore wind development, while also supporting its expansion into cross-border grid projects. Taihan stated that this move further consolidates its vertically integrated business model, which encompasses submarine cable design, manufacturing, transportation, and installation.
A Taihan representative commented: "By additionally acquiring a cable-laying vessel, we have established an installation system capable of simultaneously executing offshore wind projects and long-distance grid interconnection projects. Based on 'PALOS' and 'Skandi Connector,' we will continue to safely execute various submarine cable projects both domestically and internationally, and further enhance our competitiveness in the global market."
