en.Wedoany.com Reported - Hyundai Motor Group's affiliates Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Engineering officially integrated their respective research organizations on the 1st to establish the "Hyundai Motor Group Construction Technology Research Institute," aiming to address industry trends in energy transition and smart construction.

The newly established institute is a direct subsidiary of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of both companies, with over 200 R&D personnel, making it the largest research and development (R&D) organization among domestic construction companies in South Korea. The first director is Kim Jae-young (김재영), former Vice President for Research at Seoul National University, who assumed the role of Director of Hyundai Engineering & Construction's Technology Research Institute last year.
The institute will focus on four core areas: energy, future housing, smart construction, and infrastructure. Specific areas include next-generation energy technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR), hydrogen energy, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF); new housing products, construction methods, and housing data applications; enhancing construction safety and quality and preventing human errors using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics; and future infrastructure technologies such as underground space and mobility.
To expand Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen energy ecosystem, the two companies are jointly participating in the development of a "5MW-class plant-type PEM water electrolysis system" and large-scale demonstration projects on Jeju Island. Additionally, the institute will collaborate to enhance the utilization rate of core technologies such as inter-floor noise reduction technology and Precast Concrete (PC), and jointly invest in construction automation research, including robotics, to maximize R&D efficiency.
A representative from the HMG Construction Technology Research Institute stated that the establishment of a large-scale research organization enables technology development and demonstration that would be difficult for individual companies to achieve. The institute will combine the strengths of both parties, concentrating resources to support strategic infrastructure that strengthens Hyundai Motor Group's future competitiveness.
