en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power has signed a strategic framework agreement with green hydrogen project developer Protium to jointly explore multiple deployment models for future green hydrogen projects in the UK, focusing on Protium's extensive portfolio of Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR) projects.

Under the new agreement, the parties are evaluating multiple collaboration pathways, which may include delivering containerised green hydrogen plants through ITM Power's newly established Build-Own-Operate subsidiary Hydropulse, while Protium may also opt to directly acquire ITM's market-leading electrolysis assets. This parallel-track approach aims to ensure optimal project delivery, technical alignment, and value for money through rigorous commercial due diligence.
Within this framework, the first area of active exploration is the flagship Cromarty Hydrogen Project in the Scottish Highlands. Recently acquired by Protium, the project successfully secured government support funding through Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1). The 15 MW electrolyser capacity of the Cromarty project can produce approximately 7 tonnes of green hydrogen per day at peak output (around 2,000 tonnes per year). The project aims to provide localised, reliable energy for regional decarbonisation, targeting customers including heavy industry heat and power users—many of whom are currently off the national gas grid. Phase one of the Cromarty project alone is expected to create approximately 30 high-skilled local jobs and apprenticeship opportunities in the region.
Protium will continue to serve as the primary project developer, leading design, permitting, and delivery efforts. The Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Cromarty project is currently targeted for December 2026.
The strategic framework extends beyond Scotland. Protium has a strong national development pipeline, including its South Tees Net Zero Hydrogen project, other projects shortlisted for HAR 2, and a "pipeline" of projects for HAR 3, as well as multiple unsubsidised developments across the UK. The agreement with ITM Power provides a scalable template to support future multi-megawatt deployments as the UK transitions to a net-zero economy.
