The project adopts Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) technology, with a designed annual production capacity of approximately 160,000 tons of SAF, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, aiming to contribute to Europe's energy sovereignty. Under the agreement, the partners commit to funding the project's development phase, covering engineering studies and other necessary activities to advance the Final Investment Decision (FID).

Sustainable aviation fuel is considered a primary means of decarbonizing aviation. The EU's RefuelEU Aviation Regulation sets SAF blending targets, requiring 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, which will drive an eightfold increase in demand between 2030 and 2050. Among existing production routes, Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) is regarded as a scalable and cost-competitive option, capable of converting advanced ethanol produced from agricultural and forestry waste into a ready-to-use fuel that can be directly blended with conventional aviation kerosene, suitable for existing engines and aircraft.

During the project development phase, Technip Energies will serve as the lead developer and engineering service provider, contributing its expertise in technology scaling and complex project execution. Airbus and Safran, as global leaders in aerospace, will participate as industry partners, sales facilitators, and potential SAF buyers. Tereos, a French agricultural cooperative and a leader in European ethanol production, aims to supply and secure the required advanced ethanol for the project. The four partners cover the entire value chain from feedstock supply to aviation end-use.

The project has achieved a key milestone: the Port of Dunkirk has granted Technip Energies an industrial site in northern France. Following the establishment of the joint venture, this site will provide Rebound with logistical advantages in feedstock and product transportation, as well as streamlined permitting processes. Subsequent steps include: selecting a technology licensor, conducting licensing activities, initiating pre-Front End Engineering Design (pre-FEED) and Front End Engineering Design (FEED), finalizing feedstock supply and SAF purchase contracts, and securing financing for asset construction.
