en.Wedoany.com Reported - United Airlines has added four new routes at its Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) hub. According to Cirium Diio data, the airport is the fourth busiest hub for the Star Alliance carrier, with daily flight operations reaching 785 this month. This route expansion comes as Southwest Airlines also adds 15 routes (including resumptions).

United Express will launch flights from EWR to Charlottesville, Knoxville, Bentonville/Fayetteville (Northwest Arkansas), and Omaha. These routes were previously part of the airline's network, though not recently operated, and all four destinations are already served by other carriers to the greater New York area. However, they currently lack United Express service from EWR.
On September 24, the airline will begin flights from EWR to Charlottesville, Virginia, located 251 nautical miles (465 kilometers) away. This short-haul route will be operated daily by GoJet Airlines using a three-class, 50-seat Bombardier CRJ550. Flight UA4414 departs EWR at 12:52 PM, arriving at 2:12 PM; the return flight UA4168 departs at 2:53 PM, returning at 4:13 PM. The route was last operated in 2012. With the resumption of this United Express service, it will complement existing multiple daily flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). It remains unclear whether these routes will be adjusted.
In the 12 months ending April 2026, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) data shows 82,330 local passengers traveled between Charlottesville and the greater New York area. Nearly all passengers flew on direct flights operated by Delta Connection and American Eagle to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). Given EWR's schedule and geographic location, United naturally focuses on connecting traffic through this hub.

Flights to the remaining three cities will also resume on September 24. United Express will operate two daily flights to Knoxville (operated by GoJet CRJ550), one daily flight to Northwest Arkansas (operated by Republic Airways' Embraer E175), and one daily flight to Omaha (operated by Republic Airways E175). Northwest Arkansas also serves Bentonville, the birthplace of Walmart, where the retail giant's headquarters remain. According to the airline's website, later this year, the flight time from EWR to Northwest Arkansas is expected to be 3 hours and 41 minutes, slightly longer than the flight to Nebraska's largest city. DOT data shows United Express last regularly operated EWR to Knoxville and Omaha in 2020, and to Northwest Arkansas in 2022.
Only one of these four city pairs will face direct competition. United will compete directly with Allegiant Air in the local market, which has operated the route for a decade. United will also face indirect competition from American Eagle and Delta Connection, which operate routes from Knoxville and Northwest Arkansas to LGA; meanwhile, Delta Connection and Southwest Airlines also operate Omaha to LGA. American Eagle operated flights from the Nebraska city to LGA until September 2025.
In the 12 months ending April 2026, Knoxville had 191,200 passengers traveling solely to and from New York City, Omaha had 160,590, and Northwest Arkansas had 137,903. Due to Allegiant Air's operations, passenger traffic from EWR to Knoxville reached 65,600. Other cities had much lower traffic due to the lack of direct flights: Omaha 26,700, and Northwest Arkansas 17,300. United's return is expected to boost these numbers.

In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, DOT data shows United Express had an average load factor of 75% on routes from EWR to Knoxville, Omaha, and Northwest Arkansas. The route to Arkansas had the lowest result (71%), but due to more premium travel and fewer connecting passengers, it yielded higher revenue, balancing overall performance. Only 13% to 27% of passengers on these routes transferred to other flights at EWR, primarily focusing on local traffic. For example, the Omaha route had 27% of passengers connecting, a few percentage points lower than United's overall domestic network from this New Jersey hub.
