India's Bondada Engineering Wins NTPC REL 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - India-based Bondada Engineering has secured its first and largest grid-scale vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) energy storage system (BESS) project. The company has been awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a 16.7 MW/100 MWh VRFB BESS. The project was tendered in February this year and officially awarded five months later.

NTPC awards BESS project

According to regulatory filings by Bondada Engineering, the company has received a Notification of Award (NOA) from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) to execute the vanadium redox flow battery energy storage project at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. The project aligns with the company's strategy to develop energy storage business based on advanced long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies.

In terms of scope of work, Bondada Engineering Limited will execute the EPC contract, with Delectrik Systems Pvt Ltd serving as the technology partner. This is not the first time Delectrik Systems, a flow battery original equipment manufacturer (OEM), has won an NTPC tender. The company previously won a NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance) project in 2023 to develop a 3 MWh vanadium redox flow battery-based energy storage system. That system was deployed in the first half of 2025 at the NETRA campus in Greater Noida, India. At that time, Delectrik partnered with Rays Power Infra, an EPC company that has deployed over 1.5 GWp of solar projects in India and Southeast Asia.

The project will utilize vanadium redox flow battery technology, an energy storage solution that offers several advantages over traditional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems. LFP batteries rely heavily on imported cells and have a typical lifespan of 12 to 15 years, while VRFB technology can last over 25 years, offers high intrinsic safety, stable performance with near-zero degradation under frequent charge-discharge cycles, and lower operating expenses. Additionally, India has domestic vanadium resources, making VRFB technology a favorable option for reducing long-term import dependence while supporting the government's vision of strengthening domestic energy security.

Under the contract scope of work, the contractor is required to obtain site-specific data from the owner to develop installation and implementation plans, and is responsible for supplying all equipment, components, and services necessary to make the BESS fully functional. The BESS capacity will be determined based on the rated AC discharge capacity at the injection point or metering point, and will be integrated at the 33 kV pooling substation of the solar plant. The tender documents also require the contractor to undertake comprehensive operation and maintenance (O&M) for a period of 10 years after successful commissioning of the system. Additionally, grid compliance studies, reactive power compensation, and power quality compliance covering the BESS system up to the 400 kV grid interconnection point at the NTPC REL project switchyard fall under the contractor's responsibility.

The Indian government has set a target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, while the country's current installed capacity stands at only about 3.3 GWh. This highlights the growth opportunities in India's energy storage market, driven by the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity and increasing demand for grid stability. The project further strengthens Bondada Engineering's position in the rapidly expanding BESS sector, complementing its existing renewable energy EPC portfolio.
