Airbus Launches "Wing of Tomorrow" Flight Tests in the UK

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 21, 2026, Airbus launched a new flight test campaign to evaluate the performance of high-aspect-ratio wings for next-generation single-aisle aircraft. This marks the next phase of its major research and technology program, "Wing of Tomorrow."

Over the next three years, Airbus will design, build, and flight-test full-scale wing extensions. These extensions will be installed on an A321neo aircraft to assess the performance of different wing geometries under real flight conditions. Each extension, several meters long, will replicate the fully deployed state of a folding wing in flight and will be equipped with comprehensive test instrumentation to capture in-flight behavior and evaluate the impact of longer wingspans on aircraft handling.

Sue Partridge, Head of the Airbus "Wing of Tomorrow" program, stated that for over 50 years, Airbus has been leading aviation innovation to provide more efficient aircraft for future generations. The wing is one of the biggest levers for improving flight efficiency and is crucial for next-generation single-aisle aircraft. This flight test campaign enables the team to safely challenge traditional design limits and explore the advantages of longer wings.

Airbus is currently using advanced digital modeling and wind tunnel testing to finalize the design of the wing extensions, which will then be tested in a representative flight environment. Flight data is essential for de-risking and unlocking the full potential of longer wings. The core of the "Wing of Tomorrow" program is to create longer, lighter, and thinner wings to maximize aerodynamic efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The wing extensions will be assembled at Airbus's Wing Technology Development Centre in the UK and flight-tested in Toulouse.

Airbus has built three 17-meter (ground) wing demonstrators to explore the benefits of increased wingspan and over 100 manufacturing and assembly techniques. Since 2014, the "Wing of Tomorrow" program has received £227 million in funding from the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) program. The ATI program is a collaboration between the ATI, the Department for Business and Trade, and Innovate UK, aimed at maintaining the UK's leading position in aerospace technology.

Additionally, Airbus UpNext is accelerating the eXtra Performance WING demonstrator program, focusing on developing a wing capable of changing shape in flight to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. Assembly of this flight demonstrator is nearing completion in Cazaux, southern France, with the first (remotely piloted) flight planned before the end of 2026. Both the "Wing of Tomorrow" and the eXtra Performance Wing demonstrators aim to advance wing technology for Airbus's next-generation single-aisle aircraft.
