Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 20, Global South Utilities, a UAE-based renewable energy developer, has launched construction of the 50-megawatt Sakaï solar project with a 10-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Central African Republic. The project, designed to supply electricity to over 300,000 households, will enhance grid stability and ensure reliable power availability through its storage system.

A groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Central African Republic President Pascal Bida Koyagbele, government officials, and Global South Utilities’ leadership, marked the project’s start, as reported by the Emirates News Agency. “This initiative represents a significant step toward sustainable energy access,” a company spokesperson stated, emphasizing its alignment with regional development goals.

The Sakaï project follows a comprehensive economic partnership agreement signed earlier this year between the Central African Republic and the United Arab Emirates, aimed at fostering trade and investment in key sectors. The initiative builds on Global South Utilities’ recent activities, including a July agreement with Madagascar’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy for a 50-megawatt solar plant and 25-megawatt-hour BESS in Moramanga, and a November 2024 deal with JA Solar to establish a 2-gigawatt solar cell and module factory in Egypt.

“This project will transform energy access for communities while supporting economic growth,” said a Global South Utilities representative. The Sakaï solar facility is expected to significantly boost the Central African Republic’s renewable energy capacity, which, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), stood at 40 megawatts of cumulative solar capacity at the end of 2024, unchanged from the previous year.

The integration of BESS ensures consistent power delivery, addressing fluctuations in energy demand and enhancing grid reliability. By leveraging advanced solar technology, the project supports the Central African Republic’s efforts to expand clean energy infrastructure, contributing to sustainable development and improved living standards.

Global South Utilities’ investment in the Sakaï project underscores its commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions across Africa. The collaboration with local authorities and international partners strengthens economic ties and promotes innovation, positioning the Central African Republic as a growing hub for sustainable energy development.
