Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 26, EMSTEEL, a leading steel and building materials manufacturer in the UAE, has delivered hydrogen-based rebar for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque in Sustainable City, Yas Island. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the region, with Aldar Properties becoming the first developer in the Middle East and North Africa to utilize low-emission hydrogen-based steel. The rebar, produced through EMSTEEL’s innovative green hydrogen pilot project in collaboration with Masdar, supports the mosque’s pursuit of LEED Zero Carbon certification, a pioneering step in sustainable architecture.
The delivery of the hydrogen-based rebar underscores EMSTEEL’s commitment to advancing sustainable construction practices. The green hydrogen pilot, launched last year with Masdar, enables the production of low-carbon steel, reducing the environmental impact of construction materials. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s goals for a low-carbon economy and sets a benchmark for sustainable urban development.
Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group Chief Executive Officer of EMSTEEL, stated: “This landmark delivery reinforces EMSTEEL’s commitment to driving industrial sustainability and accelerating the UAE’s transition to a low-carbon economy. In collaboration with Aldar, EMSTEEL is setting a powerful precedent for the adoption of green steel across future residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects. The partnership signals a bold shift in the construction industry, emphasising the role of innovative, locally manufactured materials in achieving national climate goals and redefining the future of urban development.”
The mosque project in Sustainable City, Yas Island, represents a model for integrating advanced materials into eco-friendly construction. By using hydrogen-based rebar, the project reduces carbon emissions associated with traditional steel production, supporting Abu Dhabi’s vision for sustainable urban growth. The collaboration between EMSTEEL and Aldar highlights the potential for locally produced, low-emission materials to transform the construction sector.
This initiative is expected to inspire further adoption of green steel in residential, commercial, and public projects across the region. EMSTEEL’s partnership with Masdar and Aldar demonstrates the impact of innovative manufacturing in achieving environmental goals, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leader in sustainable development. The successful delivery of the rebar marks a step toward broader industry transformation, promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials to meet global sustainability standards.
