Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 28, Eni S.p.A., based in Rome, Italy, and Seri Industrial have launched Eni Storage Systems, a joint venture to develop a stationary lithium battery production facility in the Brindisi industrial area. Announced on October 25, 2024, the venture, with Eni holding 50% plus one share and Seri Industrial’s subsidiary Fib holding 50% minus one share, aims to produce over 8 GWh annually of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries using a water-based process, primarily for stationary energy storage.

The project, currently in the engineering phase, is undergoing economic, financial, and authorization assessments, expected to conclude by the first quarter of 2026. Upon completion, the facility will advance to the execution phase, focusing on sustainable production and energy transition goals. The Brindisi site will produce cathode active material, essential for lithium-ion storage and release during battery cycles, and assemble Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), supporting both the Brindisi and Teverola facilities, the latter located in Caserta province.

The initiative aligns with Eni’s industrial transformation plan, emphasizing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. It strengthens the partnership between Eni and Seri Industrial, building on their collaboration at the Brindisi site and Fib’s ongoing plant development in Teverola. In the future, the Brindisi hub will incorporate battery recycling, offering services to other industry operators and enhancing resource efficiency.

The collaboration aims to capture over 10% of the European stationary battery market, establishing an integrated, advanced hub between Brindisi and Teverola. This effort supports the region’s energy transition by providing sustainable energy storage solutions, contributing to grid stability, and fostering economic growth through job creation and industrial development.

The project is expected to position Brindisi as a key player in Europe’s energy storage sector, leveraging innovative technology to meet growing demand for clean energy solutions. By integrating production and recycling, the hub will promote a circular economy, supporting both local and regional sustainability goals while reinforcing Italy’s role in the global energy transition.
