World’s First High-Power Aluminum-Ion Battery System for Energy Storage

Wedoany.com Report-Dec.8, The INNOBATT research project, coordinated by Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology (IISB), has successfully developed and tested a full-scale battery system demonstrator based on aluminium-graphite dual-ion battery (AGDIB) technology. This achievement represents an important advance for lithium-free energy storage solutions.

The completed demonstrator validates that the aluminium-graphite cell chemistry maintains stable performance not only under controlled laboratory conditions but also during realistic operating cycles that simulate practical use.

AGDIB is a rechargeable aluminium-ion battery that uses abundant and readily available materials: aluminium for the anode and natural graphite for the cathode. The technology is non-flammable and offers a favourable cost structure compared with conventional lithium-ion systems.

Tested cells have demonstrated specific energy density of up to 160 Wh/kg and power density above 9 kW/kg. The batteries support very high charge and discharge rates, making them suitable for applications requiring rapid power delivery and fast charging.

By replacing lithium with aluminium and relying on widely available graphite, the new battery chemistry reduces dependence on critical raw materials while maintaining safety and performance characteristics that meet demanding operational requirements.

The successful system-level demonstrator marks the completion of a key phase in the INNOBATT project, confirming that aluminium-graphite dual-ion technology can progress from laboratory prototypes to practical energy storage solutions capable of supporting the transition to sustainable power systems.
