Wedoany.com Report on Mar 13th, The German chemical company BASF recently introduced a new grade of Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) material, specifically designed for high-temperature food contact applications and free of Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol A (BPA). This product portfolio complies with European Commission Regulation 2024/3190, which prohibits the use of bisphenols in food contact materials, with a transition period lasting until January 2028. Six Ultrason P grades are now available to manufacturers, complete with data sheets, certificates, and food contact approvals. Producers of reusable bottles, catering utensils, coffee machine components, and high-temperature cookware can begin recertifying products currently made from Polyethersulfone (PESU), which will also be affected by the ban. BASF is committed to ensuring a smooth transition by offering a PPSU series that supports excellent processing performance, design flexibility, and long-term stability.

The EU regulation will come into effect in January 2025, prohibiting the use of harmful bisphenols in food contact materials, but PPSU is exempted and can serve as an alternative for affected applications. BASF's Ultrason P portfolio targets manufacturers who use PESU, Polysulfone (PSU), or Polyetherimide (PEI) in food contact applications.

These material grades are designed for easy demolding, offer diverse coloring options from opaque to translucent, and possess outstanding properties: temperature-independent mechanical characteristics, high resistance to cleaning agents, oils, fats, and superheated steam, along with excellent toughness and dimensional stability. Ultrason P has long been widely used in household items, catering utensils, baby bottles, and microwave containers.

Georg Graessel, Head of Global Business Management for BASF's Ultrason, stated: "The bisphenols defined in EU Regulation 2024/3190 are not used in the production of our Ultrason P. We have adapted and expanded this portfolio to provide manufacturers ample time to test and recertify their food contact products until the ban is fully enforced across the EU. Technical data sheets and the required certificates are available to support the certification process. Existing PESU injection molds can continue to be used."

The EU regulation specifically targets food contact materials and does not apply to drinking water applications. Food filtration membrane components remain exempt, allowing polysulfones to continue being used in these applications.
