en.Weodoany.com Report on Mar 27th, The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved a five-year grade crossing safety improvement plan, authorizing $376 million in funding for safety upgrades at 387 railroad grade crossing locations statewide. The plan aims to enhance safety for motor vehicle drivers and pedestrians, covering fiscal years 2027 through 2031.
Project funding comes from Illinois's Grade Crossing Protection Fund and the Rebuild Illinois program. According to information released by the ICC, this railroad crossing safety improvement plan will support the new construction or reconstruction of 21 highway bridges, 6 pedestrian grade separation facilities, upgrades to 336 warning devices, and 24 low-cost grade crossing improvements.
Key projects for fiscal year 2027 include: a grade separation and public crossing removal on the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad tracks in South Elgin, with a total cost of $59 million, of which the Grade Crossing Protection Fund provides $12 million; construction of a grade separation on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Des Plaines, costing $35 million, with $18 million funded by the Grade Crossing Protection Fund; and implementation of a grade separation project on the UP tracks in Elmhurst, with an investment of $15.5 million, supported by $5 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund.
ICC Railroad Safety Expert Aisha Jackson stated, "New automatic warning signs, crossing gates, and grade separation projects go a long way in ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians around tracks and trains." These railroad crossing safety improvement projects are expected to significantly reduce accident risks and improve traffic efficiency.
