en.Wedoany.com Reported - The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Singaporean shipbuilder Marinteknik, Singapore-based ship design company SeaTech Solutions International, and South Korean hydrogen fuel cell company VINSSEN recently signed a research cooperation agreement to jointly advance the development of hydrogen fuel cell-powered port vessels in Singapore.
Under the agreement, the four-party consortium will conduct desk research in the first phase, covering the feasibility of implementing hydrogen-powered port vessels in Singapore, including vessel concept design, design evaluation and optimization, techno-economic analysis, risk assessment and mitigation, and commercial feasibility for widespread application. If the results of the first phase meet expectations, the second phase may involve vessel construction and sea trials.
The agreement brings together expertise in vessel ownership, ship design, fuel cell propulsion, and marine technology, aiming to promote hydrogen fuel as a viable marine fuel for port operations. Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the American Bureau of Shipping, stated that after years of investment, ABS's Singapore office has advanced engineering and technical service capabilities, and this collaboration will help validate hydrogen fuel cell technology as a viable pathway for port vessels and the broader shipping industry.
ABS's Singapore office houses a Global Electrification Center focused on battery and hybrid energy systems, while the local Innovation and Research Center also supports the project. Ng Yi Han, Senior Director of Innovation, Technology, and Talent Development and Chief Transformation Officer of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), noted: "The Port of Singapore has approximately 1,600 port vessels. Decarbonizing the fleet requires solutions that can meet different vessel types and operational modes. MPA is working with ABS and industry partners to develop and pilot new technologies under this project to build capabilities and support the industry's adoption of practical low-emission solutions."
All parties expressed a positive attitude toward the collaboration. Alex Wong, Managing Director of Marinteknik, revealed that the company has delivered two fully electric port vessels and is now conducting in-depth research with local port vessel operators to analyze their specific operational characteristics and requirements, in order to tailor designs to meet industry needs. Prabjot Singh Chopra, Vice President of SeaTech, expressed eagerness to work closely with all parties to optimize vessel designs, ensuring safe and compliant integration of hydrogen fuel cell systems and improving operational efficiency. Chilhan Lee, CEO of VINSSEN, stated that the company provides hydrogen fuel cell and battery combination solutions through an integrated power management system to achieve optimized performance, efficiency, and operational reliability.
