en.Wedoany.com Reported - The New York State Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Transmission (ORES) recently issued a final siting permit for AES's 125MW Sugar Maple solar-plus-storage project. Located in the towns of Croghan and Wilna in northern New York, the project will include a 20MW co-located battery energy storage system and will connect to the grid via a 115kV transmission line. AES has not disclosed the technical details of the solar or energy storage components.

According to the New York State Department of Public Service, the project design was adjusted following local consultations to minimize environmental impacts, such as reducing overhead power line construction to preserve aesthetic values, and incorporating agricultural co-utilization within the 622-acre area, enabling agrivoltaics.

Alongside the solar-plus-storage project, ORES also approved two wind projects that will replace existing turbines at the end of their operational life, adding 218MW of wind power capacity. Public Service Commission Chair Rory Christian stated: "These approvals reflect New York's ongoing progress toward a cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable grid, demonstrating that rigorous, transparent review can go hand in hand with timely permitting."

To date, ORES has approved 35 utility-scale solar and wind projects in the state, totaling over 5.1GW of installed capacity. The New York State Senate recently passed the "Accelerating Solar for Affordable Power Act," aiming to increase distributed energy capacity to 20GW by 2035. The ninth renewable energy project solicitation launched last year is expected to attract over $5 billion in clean energy investments. Vote Solar Executive Director Sachu Constantine stated that New York is one of the states actively promoting renewable energy deployment despite the withdrawal of federal support under the Trump administration.
