en.Wedoany.com Reported - bp recently announced the first deployment of Multilateral Well Technology (MLT) in the Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The C44 well, drilled from the West Azeri platform, is the first multilateral well in the Caspian region.

Multilateral wells can penetrate multiple reservoir layers through a single wellbore, enhancing oil displacement efficiency. In the ACG project, this technology addresses challenges such as drilling through complex formations and limited platform well slots.

bp plans to undertake broader operations in the ACG project, deploying multilateral wells across the entire field. As the field enters a more complex and mature production phase, this new approach is part of the company's production decline management strategy for the field. Gio Cristofoli, bp's Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, stated that MLT is a step-change solution for ACG well delivery by increasing reservoir contact, improving rig productivity and operational efficiency, while optimizing well slot utilization and fully leveraging existing infrastructure.

The C44 well was completed 30 days ahead of schedule. bp now plans to spud three wells this year, with two wells—C44 and D41—soon to be brought online, and the remaining wells to follow between 2027 and 2028. Since a single multilateral solution cannot address the diverse reservoir conditions across the entire field, the strategy will deploy the optimal technical configuration for each subsurface target. MLT will also be combined with other technologies, such as horizontal drilling, advanced geosteering, and intelligent completion technologies, including sand control and inflow management.

On June 1, bp began producing non-associated gas (NAG) from the ACG field development project.
