en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Aires project has officially launched. Approved under the sixth call of the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 program, the project has a budget of €1.46 million and an implementation period until December 2028. Coordinated by the Energy Agency of Extremadura (Agencia Extremeña de la Energía, Agenex), the project aims to use artificial intelligence to improve energy storage management from photovoltaic self-consumption facilities, optimizing real-time energy use in the Euroace region (including Extremadura, Alentejo, and Central Portugal).

The project brings together ten entities from both sides of the Spanish-Portuguese border, aiming to develop and validate AI-based energy management solutions. These tools will consider variables such as weather forecasts, electricity prices, or consumption patterns to decide in real time whether generated energy should be consumed, stored, or injected into the grid.

The Aires project plans to analyze and characterize different energy storage technologies available on the market to assess their technical and economic feasibility in various usage scenarios. The developed solutions will be tested at pilot facilities in both countries. Specifically, the Provincial Council of Badajoz (Diputación de Badajoz) will integrate a battery energy storage system into a self-consumption facility, while the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre) will experiment with producing and storing green hydrogen using surplus solar energy.

These tests will validate the solutions' performance in real-world environments and analyze their scalability potential. In addition to technical development, the project includes knowledge transfer actions targeting businesses, public administrations, and energy communities, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector, aiming to promote the adoption of solutions and their replicability in other regions.

In addition to Agenex, project participants include several universities, research centers, business associations, and energy agencies from Spain and Portugal, such as the University of Extremadura (Universidad de Extremadura), CIIAE, and the University of Évora (Universidade de Évora). The General Directorate of Industry, Energy, and Mines of the Government of Extremadura, along with the General Secretariat of Science and Innovation, provide support as collaborating entities.

Through this cross-border cooperation approach, the Aires project aims to promote more efficient energy storage management, contributing to the transition of the Euroace region towards a more flexible and sustainable energy system.
