Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 11, US-based Entergy Arkansas has announced plans to invest $1.6 billion in building a 754 MW natural gas power plant, the Jefferson Power Station, near Redfield, pending approval from the Arkansas Public Service Commission. The facility will be located at Entergy’s White Bluff site in Jefferson County and is expected to begin operations in 2029.

Entergy Arkansas said the project aims to meet growing electricity demand across the state while keeping customer rates below the national average. Construction is projected to generate about $2.9 billion in total economic impact and support over 3,600 jobs during the development phase. The project is also expected to contribute $128 million in local, county, and sales taxes, supporting schools, transportation infrastructure, and other public services. Once operational, the plant will employ roughly 22 full-time staff members.
The Jefferson Power Station will use combined cycle combustion turbine technology capable of powering more than 355,000 homes. The plant is designed to operate consistently, providing reliable generation when renewable sources are unavailable and supporting stable electricity supply during periods of high demand or extreme weather. Company officials note the facility will use technology approximately 40% more efficient than older generation units, lowering fuel and operating costs for customers.
Entergy Arkansas president and CEO Laura Landreaux said: “Jefferson Power Station represents a cornerstone investment in Arkansas’s energy future. This facility will strengthen reliability, keep costs low for our customers, and provide the dependable energy supply our communities need to thrive. We’re building for the next generation of Arkansans. This investment demonstrates Entergy’s proactive preparation for Arkansas’ economic future. While continuing to deliver reliable service to existing customers, this investment will also give new businesses and industries confidence that Arkansas has the reliable, affordable power they need to grow.”
The company plans to engage local suppliers during construction and has invited prospective vendors in the state to register for consideration. Additional plans at the White Bluff location include potential conversion of existing coal units to natural gas for peaking power needs, and integration with projects such as Arkansas Cypress solar and battery storage. These measures aim to diversify energy resources available to customers and provide stability against natural gas price fluctuations.
Local authorities have expressed support for Jefferson Power Station, emphasizing its importance in sustaining regional competitiveness and meeting the electricity needs of residents and industries. The plant is expected to enhance the state’s energy infrastructure while providing long-term economic and operational benefits.
In summary, Entergy Arkansas’ Jefferson Power Station represents a major investment in reliable, efficient natural gas generation, designed to strengthen the state’s energy supply, support economic growth, and provide cost-effective power to communities across Arkansas.
