Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 14, U.S. firm GE Vernova and Germany’s Siemens Energy are in discussions to supply gas turbines for a planned $7 billion energy project intended to rebuild Syria’s power generation capacity. The project focuses on restoring essential infrastructure and expanding electricity supply after years of disruption.

Workers maintain power generation transformers in the Al-Kiswah area of the Damascus countryside, near Damascus, Syria May 26, 2025.

In May, Syria signed an agreement with a subsidiary of Qatar’s Power International Holding to construct four combined-cycle gas turbine power plants with a combined output of 4,000 megawatts. The arrangement also includes a 1,000-MW solar component, representing one of the country’s largest planned energy developments.

According to one of the sources, Siemens Energy and GE Vernova may both obtain turbine supply contracts, although discussions remain at an early stage. The sources noted that financial details for the turbine portion have not been disclosed, and they did not estimate the potential value of these contracts. Another source said the talks may expand beyond turbines to include essential power grid equipment.

Siemens Energy confirmed that its representatives met Syrian officials to review options for improving electricity supply. The company told Reuters: “A local delegation met with Syrian decision-makers to explore how the country’s power supply could be improved in the short term.” A spokesperson added: “While no specific agreements or contracts have been made, we are ready to contribute our technical expertise if it can help establish and stabilise a reliable energy supply and support the population.”

GE Vernova, Power International Holding, and Syria’s information ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Syria’s energy sector has been significantly affected by damage to facilities over many years, resulting in electricity production far below national requirements. Supply conditions have shown some improvement recently due to increased availability of natural gas from external sources. However, domestic production remains reduced, with output estimated to have declined to about 3 billion cubic metres in 2023 compared with 8.7 bcm in 2011.

Additional initiatives aimed at restoring energy capacity are also progressing. On Wednesday, UAE-based Dana Gas said it signed a preliminary agreement with Syria’s state oil company to evaluate redevelopment options for natural gas fields affected earlier in the conflict.

Multiple international companies have expressed interest in contributing technical expertise or investment toward rebuilding essential power infrastructure. These proposals include plans related to oil and gas development, electricity generation, and long-term supply stability.

Overall, the turbine discussions between GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and the project developers represent an early but notable step toward expanding electricity generation capabilities and supporting large-scale reconstruction of Syria’s power sector.
