Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 23, RWE announced that it secured three new advanced Agri-PV projects in Italy through the latest Resilience and Recovery Plan auction. The projects include Acquafredda 2 at 11.7MWac in Campania, Enna Piscopo at 9.5MWac in Sicily and Cave at 9MWac in Calabria. According to the company, these developments will feature approximately 47,000 solar modules.
RWE stated that construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with commissioning planned for 2026. The three projects will use elevated mounting structures, consisting of two high tracker systems with a movable axis and one high fixed-tilt configuration. The company said that these designs support the development of agrivoltaic systems by allowing sheep grazing or crop harvesting to take place beneath the panels, forming an integrated agricultural and power generation layout.
RWE added that the structures will help safeguard agricultural areas from weather-related challenges such as hail, frost, drought and heavy rainfall. The company will monitor meteorological conditions, agricultural yields and the performance of the Agri-PV systems across all three sites.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “This is great timing.” She said: “Shortly before the completion of our two Agri-PV projects from last year's auction, we now have the green light to start construction on three more projects using this innovative technology.” She added: “Italy is taking the lead in Agri-PV because land is a scarce resource that must be used responsibly and efficiently.” She said: “We look forward to continuing to support Italy's energy targets.”
RWE said it currently operates 17 onshore wind farms in Italy with a combined installed capacity of 598MW. The company added that its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants, Morcone at 9.8MWac and Acquafredda at 9.3MWac, are also located in Campania. In addition, RWE is constructing the 47MW Serra Palino wind farm in Apulia and the 45MW Venusia wind farm in Basilicata.
These announcements reflect RWE’s ongoing expansion in Italy’s renewable energy sector and its focus on integrating agricultural activity with solar power generation through advanced agrivoltaic technology.
