Wedoany.com Report-Dec.7, Eni has successfully started production from Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project offshore the Republic of the Congo, ahead of the original schedule. The milestone follows the introduction of gas into the new FLNG unit Nguya, which now operates alongside the existing FLNG Tango that began production in late 2023.

The second phase adds the converted FLNG Nguya – a 376-metre-long, 60-metre-wide floating liquefaction vessel – together with three new production platforms and the repurposed Scarabeo 5 gas treatment and compression unit. This brings total project capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), or approximately 4.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually.

Both FLNG units draw gas from the Marine XII block's Nené and Litchendjili fields. The integrated design allows flexible processing of varying gas compositions and supports potential future field tie-backs. Advanced technologies incorporated in the facilities help reduce the overall carbon footprint, while the conversion of Scarabeo 5 from a drilling rig demonstrates practical industrial reuse.

Eni confirmed that the first LNG cargo from the expanded facilities is planned for export in early 2026. Phase 2 reached first gas only 35 months after construction of the Nguya began, establishing a new industry reference for project execution speed.

The company highlighted the contribution of local resources: "This milestone was achieved thanks to a combination of technological innovation, rigorous industrial planning, and strong engagement with local stakeholders. A significant part of the project was carried out entirely in Congo, enhancing the skills of the local workforce and further strengthening the national industrial sector."

The Congo LNG project continues to provide a reliable route to monetise the country's substantial offshore gas reserves through phased development and world-class floating infrastructure. By maximising local content and applying proven conversion techniques, the initiative delivers both energy supply and lasting economic benefits to the Republic of the Congo. With both vessels now operational, the project is well positioned to maintain steady production and meet growing international demand for LNG in the coming years.
