en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 24th, Sumitomo Corporation Brazil and Cemvita have recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on an integrated biomethane (renewable natural gas, RNG) and renewable bio-oil (FermOil) project in Brazil.

According to the MoU, the two parties will jointly assess the feasibility of integrating Cemvita's renewable bio-oil technology with renewable natural gas production at an initial facility in Brazil. The project plans to evaluate approximately five types of waste and byproduct feedstocks to determine their suitability for simultaneous RNG and renewable bio-oil production, aiming to enhance carbon efficiency, operational synergy, and project economic benefits. The parties will also explore opportunities to extend this integrated model to other facilities and projects.

Moji Karimi, CEO of Cemvita, stated: "This collaboration reflects our vision for the future of bioenergy, which we view not as a single-product project but as an integrated system. By combining Cemvita's biotechnology platform with Sumitomo's global infrastructure capabilities and market access, we can unlock higher-value, lower-carbon outcomes from waste and accelerate commercialization in Brazil."

Takamasa Ueda, Senior Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation Brazil, said: "Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is one of Sumitomo Corporation's strategic commodities of global focus, and we see Brazil as a key location for long-term biofuel supply. Integrating Cemvita's bio-oil technology with RNG projects can generate strong operational and economic synergies. This enables us to simultaneously produce RNG while increasing the supply of waste-based bio-oil for sustainable aviation fuel. This integrated approach is crucial to overcoming the complexities of biofuel projects and scaling them up responsibly."

João Simões, Director of the Energy Innovation Initiative at Sumitomo Corporation Brazil, pointed out that Brazil, as a major agricultural power, is one of the world's significant producers of agricultural processing residues and byproducts. He stated: "By integrating the production of bio-oil (a precursor to sustainable aviation fuel) and renewable natural gas within the same biorefinery, we will be able to improve the economic viability of both products, thereby benefiting both residue producers and sustainable aviation fuel/RNG consumers."

The collaboration will be managed by a Joint Steering Committee responsible for overseeing project progress and risks. A commercial and technical roadmap is expected to be formed by 2026, along with the completion of a comprehensive assessment report.
