en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 6, Nepal's Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, stated in Kathmandu that green hydrogen will provide significant opportunities for achieving the country's sustainable development and advancing the clean energy transition.

He made these remarks during a national assessment workshop on the Green Hydrogen Initiative, organized by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre. Shrestha noted that Nepal, with its abundant clean energy resources, possesses significant potential for developing a green hydrogen industry.

Minister Shrestha stated that globally, green hydrogen is increasingly being used in sectors such as industry, transportation, and energy storage to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and support climate commitments. He believes Nepal should seize the opportunity presented by the growth in global green hydrogen investment to promote industrial development, diversify its energy mix, and explore export markets.

On the policy front, the minister revealed that the government has implemented the "Green Hydrogen Policy-2080" and has allocated special funds in the upcoming fiscal year's budget for pilot commercial production projects. He called for enhanced collaboration among government agencies, development partners, universities, research institutions, and the private sector.

Energy Secretary Chiranjibi Chataut stated that the budget has reserved resources for a 2.5 MW green hydrogen pilot plant located in Hetauda (Makwanpur). Nawaraj Dhakal, Executive Director of the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, indicated that an assessment is currently underway regarding the implementation status of the policy, potential projects, and investment priorities. According to him, the recommendations from the workshop will be used to formulate an action plan, focusing on policy implementation, research, pilot projects, safety standards, technical capacity building, and international cooperation mechanisms for large-scale green hydrogen development.
