Wedoany.com Report-Dec.24, BYD announced a new partnership with Mobil on December 23 to launch a co-branded engine oil line developed specifically for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

The product range, marketed as "BYD Mobil Hybrid Dedicated," is tailored to BYD's DM-i PHEV platform. It provides purpose-built lubrication for hybrid powertrains that combine an internal combustion engine with electric propulsion.

Although BYD ceased production of pure internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022, engine oil continues to play an essential role in its extensive and expanding PHEV lineup. BYD holds a leading position in China’s PHEV market.

Hybrid engines function under more demanding conditions than traditional gasoline engines. Frequent start-stop cycles, short low-temperature operation periods, and intermittent high-load running create specialized requirements for lubricant performance.

To meet these needs, BYD and Mobil jointly engineered the new oil series based on the distinct operating characteristics of PHEV engines. The formulation prioritizes wear protection, engine cleanliness, and long-term stability.

The flagship product is a 0W-20 viscosity grade oil. It offers substantially higher anti-wear performance compared with standard industry benchmarks and shows significantly improved resistance to emulsification. This helps address moisture-related challenges that can occur in hybrid engines during short, low-temperature trips, ensuring reliable lubrication across diverse driving conditions.

The oil range supports the dynamic and variable operating profiles typical of PHEVs, including urban commuting, brief journeys, and occasional high-load scenarios.

By customizing lubrication properties to hybrid-specific demands, BYD and Mobil aim to improve engine efficiency, component durability, and overall owner confidence.

The collaboration highlights how electrification continues to influence not only vehicle design but also supporting systems and the broader automotive supply chain.

The partnership reflects ongoing efforts to optimize performance and reliability in the growing PHEV segment, where engine oil must adapt to unique hybrid operating patterns.
