en.Wedoany.com Reported - Finnish technology group Wärtsilä announced on May 6, 2026, that it has officially joined the EU-funded H4PERION project. The project, part of the research program under the Horizon Europe framework, is led by the University of Vaasa in Finland and will run for four years, lasting until May 2030.

Within the project, Wärtsilä will focus on developing a new combustion concept that enables internal combustion engines to safely and efficiently use a blend of hydrogen and biomethane, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100% hydrogen operation under open-sea conditions. Wärtsilä will also develop a catalyst system to reduce methane slip and other emissions, thereby lowering the lifecycle carbon footprint of gas-fuelled vessels.

Demonstration testing will proceed along two parallel tracks: selected technologies will undergo sea trials on the ferry "Aurora Botnia," operated by Wasaline on the route between Finland and Sweden; simultaneously, a full-scale engine will be tested in a laboratory environment simulating real sailing conditions. Data from both sources will be integrated into a digital twin model for future design optimization and long-term technology accumulation. The project also includes training programs for crew and port personnel, as well as activities related to the safe use of sustainable fuels.

Henri Karimäki, Research Director at the University of Vaasa, stated: "The industry is exploring various low-carbon fuels, and hydrogen is seen as a potential zero-carbon option. By focusing on the practical application and safety of hydrogen in the maritime sector, the H4PERION project aims to drive innovation and set new standards for the industry." Anders Öster, General Manager of Research Coordination & Funding at Wärtsilä Marine, added: "Achieving net-zero emissions in shipping is a journey we must undertake together. Only through close cross-industry collaboration and shared determination can we accelerate the advancement of zero-carbon maritime solutions."

H4PERION brings together 16 partners from 7 European countries, covering fields such as ship design, engine development, ship operation, training, safety, and academic research. In addition to the University of Vaasa and Wärtsilä, partners include WEGEMT, NTUA, TalTech, ABS, Deltamarin, University of Oulu, Åbo Akademi University, Meric Wave Computanics, DLR, BALance Technology Consulting, Meyer Werft, and Wasaline. In 2025, the Wärtsilä Group employed 17,900 professionals across 78 countries worldwide, with net sales of EUR 6.9 billion.
