en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 7, the Zambian government signed the implementation agreement for the Northrise solar photovoltaic power plant. Located in the Twapia area of Ndola, Copperbelt Province, the project has a planned installed capacity of 16 MW. Developed by Lifesong for Orphans Zambia Limited, it is expected to commence commercial operations in July 2026.
The Northrise project represents a concrete step in Zambia's recent acceleration of private capital involvement in renewable energy generation. The signing of the implementation agreement establishes an execution framework for project development rights, risk allocation between the government and the developer, and subsequent construction and operational arrangements. Over USD 12 million has already been invested in the first phase. The developer also plans to expand by an additional 35 MW in the second phase, gradually transforming the facility from a small-scale grid-connected solar project into a clean energy source with greater regional power supply support capacity. Zambia's power system has long been heavily reliant on hydropower. In recent years, drought has put pressure on reservoir inflows and generation capacity, while industrial and commercial growth, mining resumption, and expanding residential electricity demand have continuously driven up power needs. Solar PV projects, with their relatively short construction periods, can provide incremental power to the grid during dry seasons and periods of power stress, and can also reduce the systemic vulnerability associated with a single hydropower structure. For the Copperbelt Province, where mining, manufacturing, logistics, and community electricity demand around Ndola are concentrated, the addition of new solar power will help improve local power supply resilience and drive demand for module installation, inverter and step-up equipment, electrical construction, grid connection, operation and maintenance management, and local technical positions.Wedoany".
