en.Wedoany.com Reported - First WATT Renewable Energy and MTN Nigeria have announced a strategic renewable energy infrastructure partnership aimed at reducing reliance on diesel systems at key facilities and enhancing operational resilience.

Under the agreement, First WATT will also provide renewable energy systems to power electric vehicle charging infrastructure at selected MTN sites in Nigeria.
The initiative comprises two main project components. The first part is an Energy-as-a-Service deployment, which will install approximately 34 MWp of solar photovoltaic power generation capacity and 40 MWh of battery energy storage systems at selected MTN facilities nationwide. These facilities include data centers, switching facilities, cable landing stations, customer service centers, and other network-critical locations.
The second part involves deploying renewable energy infrastructure at eight MTN facilities across the country to power 60 kW electric vehicle charging stations.
Together, these two components aim to reduce reliance on diesel systems, lower operational emissions, ensure operational uptime, strengthen business continuity, and increase the share of renewable energy used at MTN operational sites, including selected electric vehicle charging points.
Based on current project assumptions, the initiative is expected to avoid approximately 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over five years, with results depending on operational performance and final emission calculations.
Tobechukwu Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, stated that this partnership helps reduce dependence on diesel, improve operational efficiency, and enhance system resilience. This initiative falls under the company's "Project Zero" within its "Doing for Planet" sustainability pillar, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the use of renewable energy in operations.
