Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 14, L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEG), a subsidiary of India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has entered into a joint development agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to establish a 300 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) green ammonia facility in Kandla, Gujarat, India. The collaboration aims to produce and commercialize green ammonia, with ITOCHU planning to use the output for bunkering applications in Singapore.

LTEG secured a land parcel in Kandla last year to support its green hydrogen and ammonia initiatives. This partnership aligns with LTEG’s goal to expand its presence in the green energy value chain and supports ITOCHU’s efforts to promote low-carbon ammonia as a zero-emission marine fuel. To advance this initiative, ITOCHU has engaged Sasaki Shipbuilding to construct a 5,000 cubic meter ammonia bunkering vessel and Izumi Steel Works to build an ammonia tank plant for the vessel, with delivery scheduled for 2027 to facilitate a demonstration project in Singapore.

Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President of L&T, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, stating: “As the global energy landscape shifts decisively towards sustainability, L&T remains deeply committed to driving the clean energy transition through innovation, strategic partnerships, and engineering excellence. The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus.”

Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President and President of the Machinery Company at ITOCHU Corporation, highlighted the collaboration’s significance, saying: “Through this joint development with one of the largest and most respected companies in India’s private sector, L&T Group, our initiatives to introduce low-carbon ammonia to the maritime sector as an alternative zero-emission fuel will be reinforced. With this collaboration, Kandla, located on the west coast of India, will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore.”

The Kandla facility is poised to strengthen the global supply chain for sustainable marine fuels, supporting the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon solutions. By combining LTEG’s expertise in green energy infrastructure with ITOCHU’s focus on innovative fuel applications, the partnership positions Kandla as a key hub for green ammonia production, contributing to cleaner energy ecosystems in India and Singapore.
